If your garbage disposal does not grind when you turn it on and only makes a humming noise, there is something stuck inside not allowing the blades to turn.

Try the following tips to free the blades:

• Turn the disposal off. Press the reset or reverse switch on the bottom of the garbage disposal. 
• Depending on the age of the disposal, you might find that a hexagon wrench is needed to turn a fitting back and forth to free the mechanism. 
• You can use the old-fashioned approach to freeing the blades by placing the end of a broom handle into the garbage disposal and moving the blades back and forth to release the clog.
